I have always had a passion to be an active member of my community. I began my volunteering journey at the age of 14 and was brought up with the belief that if something needs to be done then do not wait for anyone else. This has stuck with me throughout my life and formed our mission statement of “Be the change in the community you want to see.” Salaam Peace was set up officially in 2009. Through continued hard work, passion and a strong team of people around me we have had an impact in our community. However, despite the challenges and successes there is always more to be done.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer
My journey with Salaam Peace started as a participant, aged 11. Over the next 9 years I progressed into a volunteer and then a paid member of staff, leading a range of sports-based community projects in Walthamstow. By 2020 I was appointed Director of Operations having developed my skill set to include bid writing and partnership development. Among my achievements, I won the Young Leader with Impact Award for efforts to tackle youth crime, at the inaugural London Impact Awards in February 2020, and have graduated with a first-class degree in Psychology from King’s College London.
Director of Administration & Strategy
I began my association with Salaam Peace in 2012 as a participant on a group gym project at Peter May in Waltham Forest. I felt an immediate sense of belonging and the family atmosphere inspired me to get involved further as a volunteer. Through the support and learning from Sab, I developed my skills coupled with my pride in time management and reliability.
By 2020, I have raised over £100,000 for the organisation, manage and deliver projects including Girls Sports Sessions and Female Fitness. I work closely with Sab and Azi on administration and fundraising. Additionally, I have completed a Psychology degree from Queen Mary University London.
Youth Engagement Officer
My wonderful journey with SP started in 2017 when I first became a participant, playing for the Leyton Sixth Form College football team, coached by Sab. After finishing college Sab persuaded me to come and volunteer at SP, in which I helped lead many youth projects that were taking place. After a few months I became a paid member of staff and now I am currently in charge of a boys youth football team who take part in the Hackney Marshes Youth League. I am also responsible for an estate project in Hackney in which we run football and multi sports twice a week. During this time I have had the privilege to watch many young people grow and develop in many different ways and i have also been able to make really meaningful connections with many of them too.
I have been awarded with a Diana award for the work i have done in the community so far but i live by the phrase ‘there is always more to be done’. I am currently studying a Sports Science PE and Coaching degree at Middlesex University and look to graduate very soon.
I have known Sab’s since childhood. Although 2 years age difference Sab was of the generation above and was the Superstar Footballer and popular young person that we all looked up to. Sab’s engaged me and my friends through football and social education at Tyssen school in Hackney when he was only 14. These skills developed and success on the football pitch with Sab’s and Leyton All Stars as well as a successful career in IT means I have lived the Salaam Peace methodology. I got involved with Salaam Peace since it’s official inception, helping with our first funded project of engaging young men in Hackney through sport and social education.
SP Leicester Lead
Communications & Marketing
My first interaction with Salaam Peace was when I took my 4 year old son along to a Sunday morning multi-sport session. The team onsite were very engaging with all the children, 4-11 years old, and seeing the relationship between staff and the participants was very inspirational. Being from an area that is used to a lot negative press, this was a feel good moment. I wanted to get involved and here I am!!
